The 22nd Amendment codified the two-term limits on Presidents. While the original Constitution put no limits on the number of terms any elected official could serve, the example set by George Washington of two elected terms was long considered the de facto rule for Presidents. If two terms were enough for him, who would dare think themselves above that?
